Samsung’s First Tri-Fold Galaxy Device: What to Expect

After months of anticipation, Samsung foldable fans are finally getting the news they’ve been waiting for. The launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Z Flip 7, and the new Z Flip 7 FE was undoubtedly exciting, but the real buzz is around Samsung’s upcoming tri-fold device.

During the recent Galaxy Unpacked event on July 9th, Samsung’s Mobile Division Head TM Roh dropped a bombshell for journalists in New York City. According to The Korea Times, Roh confirmed that Samsung is hard at work on its first-ever tri-fold smartphone, with a targeted launch at the end of this year. While the initial release may be limited to South Korea and neighboring regions, a global rollout is expected in 2026.

In a separate interview with Tech Advisor, Kadesh Beckford, Samsung UK’s Smartphone Specialist Product Manager, hinted at the company’s plans, stating, “We’re currently just observing this space, and when everything is ready for our consumers, we’ll be bringing something meaningful to the market.”

Despite the buzz surrounding Samsung’s tri-fold device, an official name has yet to be decided. Rumors have suggested the ‘Galaxy G Fold’ moniker, but other options are being considered.

A tri-fold phone features two folds, akin to a book-style device, offering a regular smartphone experience on the front screen that unfolds twice to reveal a larger internal display, similar to a tablet. Huawei’s Mate XT Ultimate Design is currently the only tri-fold device on the market, boasting a 6.4-inch cover display that expands to 7.9 inches with one fold and 10.2 inches when fully unfolded.

Although Huawei launched the Mate XT globally earlier this year, the device is not available in the UK or the US due to Huawei’s ongoing software issues. With Samsung poised to enter the tri-fold market, it has a significant opportunity to dominate the foldable category, especially in regions where Huawei’s devices are not accessible.

Despite the potential for Samsung to capture a significant market share with its tri-fold device, pricing could be a major hurdle. Huawei’s Mate XT comes with a hefty price tag of €3499 in Europe, making it a luxury purchase. Samsung’s tri-fold device is expected to be priced higher than the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which already carries a premium price tag.

While Samsung’s tri-fold device promises to push the boundaries of foldable technology, the high price point may deter all but the most dedicated tech enthusiasts. As Samsung gears up for the release of its highly anticipated tri-fold device, the tech world eagerly awaits to see how it will revolutionize the foldable smartphone market.
