Shamim M. Momin to Lead Bronx Museum as Director and Chief Curator

Shamim M. Momin, co-founder of the public art nonprofit Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND), has been appointed as the new director and chief curator of the Bronx Museum. Her tenure is set to begin this September, coinciding with the museum’s upcoming expansion and renovation project.

The Bronx Museum is gearing up to unveil its newly expanded and renovated $43.9 million South Wing in the fall of 2026, featuring increased exhibition space, a new lobby, and main entrance. Momin, a seasoned curator with experience at institutions like the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Henry Art Gallery, was selected following a nationwide search to succeed Klaudio Rodriguez, who departed for the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, Florida, last year.

Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Responsibility

Momin’s appointment comes at a critical time for the Bronx Museum, which faced funding cuts under the previous administration. Despite challenges posed by the cuts, Momin remains optimistic about her new role, emphasizing the importance of embracing responsibility and continuing to build community support for the museum.

Reflecting on her extensive curatorial career and commitment to social justice in the arts, Momin expressed her dedication to championing diverse voices and underrepresented artists at the Bronx Museum. She plans to leverage her experiences to enhance accessibility and foster a culture of inclusivity within the institution.

Prioritizing Art and Social Engagement

With a background in linking art and social justice, Momin is eager to bring her expertise to the Bronx Museum and engage with staff members to shape the institution’s future direction. Her passion for supporting artists who challenge traditional norms aligns seamlessly with the museum’s longstanding commitment to fostering creativity and cultural diversity.

As the Bronx Museum prepares for a new chapter under Momin’s leadership, the art community eagerly anticipates the innovative programs and exhibitions that will emerge from this collaboration.
