The Pentagon is pressing Japan and Australia to clarify their roles in the event of a potential war between the US and China over Taiwan. This effort, led by Elbridge Colby, under-secretary of defence for policy, has caused frustration among the two key American allies in the Indo-Pacific region.

Colby has been engaging in discussions with Japanese and Australian defence officials in recent months, urging them to enhance deterrence and prepare for the possibility of a conflict over Taiwan. This push is part of the broader strategy to strengthen alliances in the region and ensure peace through strength, as advocated by President Donald Trump.

While the US does not seek war with China, it is emphasizing the importance of military readiness to support diplomacy and maintain peace. The discussions with allies include a focus on increasing defence spending to address the growing threat posed by China, particularly in the Taiwan Strait.

However, the request for specific commitments related to a potential conflict over Taiwan has caught Tokyo and Canberra by surprise. The US has historically maintained a policy of strategic ambiguity regarding Taiwan, and former President Joe Biden has deviated from this stance by suggesting US intervention. President Trump, on the other hand, has refrained from explicitly stating the US position on defending Taiwan.

The push for clarity on Taiwan planning has raised eyebrows among Japanese and Australian officials, who are hesitant to make firm commitments without knowing the full context of a potential conflict and the US response. This sensitivity is further exacerbated by political considerations in both countries, such as upcoming elections in Japan.

Despite the challenges, the US remains confident that Japan and Australia will increase defence spending in response to the rising threat from China. The focus on enhancing deterrence and military capabilities in the Indo-Pacific region is seen as crucial for maintaining stability and security in the area.

Overall, the discussions with allies reflect the ongoing efforts to strengthen alliances and address shared challenges in the region. While there may be tensions and disagreements along the way, the goal is to work together towards a more secure and equitable future for all parties involved.
