A horrifying incident unfolded in Nevada recently when a mother was arrested for abandoning her newborn baby in a dumpster. Taylor Sierra Dickinson, 28, was charged with attempted murder after allegedly placing her minutes-old baby boy in a garbage bag and leaving him in a trash bin in Sun Valley. Fortunately, the baby was discovered by a passerby and is now in stable condition.
According to reports, Dickinson claimed that she was unaware of her pregnancy and gave birth in a nearby bathroom on July 5. She expressed feelings of panic and shock, leading her to believe that abandoning the child in the trash was her best option. Dickinson, who is married and already has two children, admitted that she did not want any more kids due to financial constraints.
This heartbreaking incident is not the first time Dickinson has been involved in such a situation. In 2023, she reportedly suffered a miscarriage and left the fetus in a garbage can. Despite her troubled past, Dickinson hoped that someone would find the abandoned infant in the dumpster.
The abandoned baby was rescued nearly 10 hours after being discarded, thanks to a good Samaritan who heard cries coming from the trash bin. The child was rushed to Renown Regional Medical Center and is currently in stable condition. Sheriff Darin Balaam commended the quick thinking and courage of the community member who rescued the baby, emphasizing the importance of safe and legal options for parents in crisis.
Under Nevada’s Safe Haven Law, parents are allowed to surrender newborns to hospitals, fire stations, or law enforcement agencies within 30 days of birth. Dickinson was arrested and charged with child abuse, neglect, or endangerment, in addition to attempted murder. She is currently being held on a $1 million cash-only bail.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the resources available for parents facing difficult circumstances and the importance of seeking help rather than putting a child’s life in danger.
