As temperatures soared above 100 degrees Fahrenheit in New England in recent weeks, the region faced a significant challenge to maintain power grid reliability. However, thanks to the contribution of solar panels and batteries, the grid was able to meet the demand while reducing fossil fuel generation and saving consumers over $20 million.

The Acadia Center, a regional nonprofit, analyzed the financial benefits of clean energy during the heatwave and highlighted the crucial role played by local solar, energy efficiency, and other clean energy resources in keeping the power grid reliable and affordable for consumers.

On June 24, as temperatures peaked and demand on the New England grid reached maximum capacity, unexpected outages at power plants further strained the system. Grid operator ISO New England had to take measures to ensure the power supply, including reducing exports, importing from neighboring areas, and utilizing reserve resources.

During this critical time, rooftop solar panels and behind-the-meter solar installations, along with Vermont’s network of thousands of batteries, supplied several gigawatts of power, reducing demand on the grid and saving customers millions of dollars. This demonstrated the importance of clean energy and battery storage in making the grid less carbon-intensive, more resilient, adaptable, and affordable in the face of climate change-driven extreme weather events.

The contribution of behind-the-meter solar reached as high as 22 percent of the power being used in New England, with solar installations meeting 4.4 GW of demand at the peak. This reduced consumption from the grid, saving consumers at least $8.2 million in avoided costs.

Further analysis by the Acadia Center suggested that the true savings for consumers exceeded $19 million, showcasing the significant impact of solar and battery storage during the heatwave. In Vermont, Green Mountain Power’s network of residential and EV batteries played a critical role in relieving pressure on the grid, saving customers $3 million by reducing the need to purchase expensive power and peak demand fees.

The utility’s virtual power plant, consisting of batteries from thousands of customers, electric school bus batteries, and a mobile utility-scale battery, has proven to be a successful model that other utilities could replicate. By leveraging distributed resources to supply power to the grid and reduce demand, Green Mountain Power has demonstrated the value of investing in battery storage to save ratepayers money.

The network’s expansion over the years has shown promising results, with a significant increase in the number of customers with home batteries. By pulling power from batteries rather than the grid during peak demand times, Green Mountain Power was able to lower its capacity fees and save customers money during the heatwave.

Overall, the success of solar panels and batteries in supporting the power grid during the recent heatwave underscores the importance of investing in clean energy resources to ensure grid reliability, affordability, and sustainability in the face of climate change challenges. Looking ahead, customers of the utility can expect more hot weather and the continued expansion of the virtual power plant to bring even more savings. According to Sterling, these initiatives will ultimately put money back in the pockets of ratepayers over the long term.

As temperatures rise and energy consumption increases, the virtual power plant will play a crucial role in reducing costs for customers. By harnessing the power of renewable energy sources and utilizing smart technology, the utility can better manage energy distribution and reduce reliance on traditional power sources.

The expansion of the virtual power plant is a testament to the utility’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. By investing in renewable energy solutions, the utility is not only reducing its carbon footprint but also passing on the savings to customers.

Sterling emphasized the long-term benefits of these initiatives, highlighting the significant savings that ratepayers can expect to see over the years. By taking a proactive approach to energy management and investing in cutting-edge technology, the utility is paving the way for a more sustainable and cost-effective future.

Overall, customers can look forward to lower energy bills and a more environmentally friendly energy grid as the utility continues to expand its virtual power plant. With a focus on innovation and sustainability, the utility is poised to lead the way in providing cost-effective and efficient energy solutions for years to come.
