Emily Deschanel’s Struggle During the Early Days of “Bones” Almost Led to an Early Exit

Emily Deschanel, best known for her role as Dr. Temperance Brennan on the hit TV show “Bones,” recently opened up about the challenges she faced during the first season of the series. In a candid interview on David Duchovny’s “Fail Better” podcast, Deschanel revealed that she almost didn’t make it past Season 1 due to the demanding nature of the show.

Deschanel recalled the long and grueling hours she had to work on set, often lasting 14 to 16 hours a day. Not only that, but she also had to memorize copious amounts of dialogue, which left her feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. “I would joke that I would go home and just cry in a bathtub every night because I was just so overwhelmed,” Deschanel shared.

At one point, Deschanel’s anxiety reached a peak when an accident during her commute caused her to arrive 30 minutes late to set. This incident led to a stern talking to from series creator Hart Hanson, who expressed concerns about her work ethic. Deschanel was deeply affected by the incident, feeling shame and guilt for not being able to keep up with the demands of the show.

However, with Hanson’s support and guidance, Deschanel was able to turn things around. He helped her find ways to manage her workload better, including providing her with a bigger trailer and more time to run lines. Deschanel made sure to always be on time after that incident and was grateful for Hanson’s assistance in helping her improve.

“Bones” went on to become a huge success, running for 246 episodes across 12 seasons from 2005 to 2017. Deschanel starred alongside David Boreanaz, Michaela Conlin, T.J. Thyne, and Tamara Taylor, playing the brilliant anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan. The show followed Brennan as she used her expertise in forensic anthropology to help the FBI solve complex homicide cases.

Deschanel’s honesty about her struggles during the early days of “Bones” serves as a reminder of the challenges actors face behind the scenes. Despite the difficulties she encountered, Deschanel’s dedication and hard work ultimately paid off, leading to a successful and beloved TV series that captivated audiences for over a decade.
