In the aftermath of the tragic flash floods that claimed hundreds of lives in Texas, conversations have swirled around Jeffrey Epstein, government accountability, and the prevailing chaos linked to Donald Trump.

Amidst this whirlwind, the specter of climate change remains conspicuously absent from the dialogue. However, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has stepped in to steer the conversation back to a looming crisis that Trump seems desperate to downplay.

Sen. Sanders remarked:

“In the midst of everything else going on, it’s easy to ignore the extraordinary planetary crisis we face from climate change. But we just can’t allow ourselves to do that.”

“The past decade has recorded the warmest temperatures on record. The year 2024 was the hottest year we’ve ever documented, and January 2025 followed suit with unprecedented warmth. Western Europe recently experienced its hottest June on file. The recent heat wave in the U.S. affected nearly 190 million people, breaking records in over 280 locations. Alarmingly, the frequency of heat waves has tripled in the U.S. over the last 60 years. A Yale University study reveals that 64% of Americans believe global warming is impacting U.S. weather, and almost half claim to have felt its effects personally.”

“From May 2024 to May 2025, approximately 4 billion people — half the global population — endured at least one month of extreme heat linked to climate change. This phenomenon has intensified Hurricane Helene last fall in the Southeast, the recent floods in Texas, and similar disasters in Vermont and Brazil last summer, along with wildfires in Canada and Los Angeles, and heat waves in the U.S., Europe, India, and Pakistan.”

“And how does President Trump respond? By dismissing climate change as a hoax and simultaneously firing the last remaining State Department employees dedicated to addressing it, blatantly ignoring one of the gravest threats to our national security.”

“Trump is prioritizing the short-term profits of fossil fuel executives over the planet and the future of coming generations.”

Indeed, Trump is catering to the fossil fuel industry, the very sector that showered him with campaign contributions as the Republican candidate in the summer of 2024. The advancements in clean energy under Biden have been systematically dismantled by Trump and the Republican majorities in Congress.

This shift is not merely political; as Senator Sanders underscores, it poses a significant risk to the health of our planet.

While Trump labels climate change a fabrication, the misguided energy policies he champions are setting the stage for long-term consequences that will burden the American populace. These policies are not only inflating energy bills but also limiting consumer choices within the energy market.

Despite being in his eighties, Bernie Sanders remains a staunch advocate for the planet’s future.

The climate crisis is not dissipating, even if Trump attempts to distract us from its urgency.
