The Southern Steel claimed victory in their final ANZ Premiership match, defeating the Northern Stars 61-55 in front of an enthusiastic Stadium Southland crowd.

Despite a hard-fought battle, the Steel secured a fourth-place finish on the ladder, marking their best performance since 2022 with five wins this season.

Maintaining a narrow lead of 45-43 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Steel faced a strong comeback from the Stars. However, a crucial play by defender Carys Stythe and an impressive intercept by Abby Lawson helped the Steel regain control and extend their lead.

Key players like Georgia Heffernan and Stythe showcased their skills, with Heffernan’s court craft and Stythe’s defensive prowess making a significant impact on the game.

The match saw intense moments as both teams fought for dominance, with standout performances from players like Kimiora Poi in the midcourt and Mila Reuelu-Buchanan for the Stars.

In a tightly contested second quarter, the Stars managed to level the scores at halftime, setting the stage for a thrilling second half.

As the game progressed, the Steel’s strategic adjustments on attack and solid defensive efforts helped them maintain a slight edge over the Stars.

Despite the Stars’ relentless efforts to narrow the gap, the Steel’s resilience and composure ultimately secured their victory, with a final score of 61-55.

Overall, it was a hard-fought win for the Steel, capping off their season on a high note and leaving fans excited for what’s to come in the future.
