The Big Picture Competition showcases the incredible biodiversity of our planet, capturing stunning moments in nature through the lenses of talented photographers. This year’s competition, now in its 12th year, received thousands of entries from around the world, highlighting aquatic life, winged creatures, terrestrial landscapes, and the intricate relationship between humans and nature.

One of the standout photographs from this year’s competition captures a lemur and its baby leaping across a rocky gap at the Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve in Madagascar. Taken by photographer Donglin Zhou, this striking image won the $5,000 Grand Prize, showcasing a rare and daring moment in the wild as the lemur troop ventured out in search of food.

In addition to the Grand Prize winner, the competition features a diverse range of images that showcase the beauty and complexity of the natural world. From underwater scenes of newts forming a ball to insects clinging to leaves, each photograph offers a unique perspective on the wonders of nature.

One particularly captivating photo captures two rays swimming underwater, creating a mesmerizing yin-yang pattern with their contrasting colors. Another image features a pallas cat with snow caked onto its fur and face, showcasing the resilience of wildlife in harsh environments.

The Big Picture Competition also includes a creative category called “Art of Nature,” which allows photographers to explore nature through a different lens. From otherworldly landscapes in Morocco to a white bat taking flight from a leaf where its babies are nestled, these images push the boundaries of traditional nature photography.

You can cast your vote for the People’s Choice Award until July 31 and visit the Big Picture exhibition at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, opening on October 5. If you’re inspired by these breathtaking images, consider becoming a Colossal Member to support independent arts publishing and gain access to exclusive benefits like ad-free browsing, discounts in the Colossal Shop, and a members-only newsletter.
