The Latest Weather Update: Tropical System Moving Towards Gulf Coast

Tropical weather system over the Florida Panhandle

The weather system moving across the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday is expected to develop into a tropical depression as it moves towards the northern Gulf Coast, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The southeast region is bracing for heavy rain and potential flooding as the tropical system approaches, following a series of deadly floods in New York City, New Jersey, and Texas Hill Country.

If the system becomes a named storm, it will be called Dexter. So far, there have been three named tropical storms this hurricane season — Andrea, Barry, and Chantal — but no hurricanes.

Forecasters predict an above-average number of named storms this season, with a 60% chance of more storms compared to previous years.

The developing weather system is expected to move fully inland by the end of the week, with southern Louisiana projected to be the hardest hit.

Local officials in New Orleans have mobilized quickly to distribute storm supplies, demonstrating the community’s resilience in times of crisis.
