Last of Chicago Carjacking and Robbery Crew Sentenced to Federal Prison

The final member of a group of four men involved in a violent carjacking and robbery spree across Chicago in September 2022 has been sentenced to federal prison. Dwight Hasberry, 31, has been handed a 15-year federal sentence, joining his co-defendants Damandre Henley, Davario McDowell, and Tyler Oates-Nelson, who received 22 years, 18 years, and 15 years in prison, respectively.

The crime spree began on September 28, 2022, when the group carjacked a 21-year-old man in the 1400 block of West Erie Street. The victim, who was sitting in his black Volkswagen Tiguan with a child in the back seat, was approached by the masked offenders who brandished firearms.

Henley, Hasberry, and McDowell forced the victim and child out of the car at gunpoint before driving off in the stolen Tiguan. Less than half an hour later, the group committed two street robberies in Ravenswood, stealing a backpack, phone, wallet, and keys. They then targeted a 7-Eleven store on West Montrose Avenue.

Inside the store, Henley allegedly assaulted the clerk and demanded money. Despite the clerk’s attempts to explain that there was no cash available, Henley resorted to violence, striking the clerk with a gun and forcing him to open the cash registers. Meanwhile, another member of the group looted the store, taking liquor and cigarettes. Henley later pistol-whipped the clerk in the back office, causing a head injury.

Interestingly, Oates-Nelson has a prior history involving 7-Eleven stores. In 2018, he was charged with robbing two Lincoln Park locations with an accomplice. Upon his arrest, police found a vehicle filled with 7-Eleven merchandise, which was also stolen in an armed carjacking. Oates-Nelson pleaded guilty in 2019 and received concurrent six-year sentences.
