Samsung is considering fully embracing the Qi2 wireless charging standard for its upcoming smartphones, including magnets for added convenience. Currently, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 support Qi2 for faster wireless charging speeds up to 15W, but lack the necessary magnets for seamless alignment with a Qi2 charger. Users have to use a Qi2-compatible case to fully benefit from the technology.

Recently, Samsung has been running a survey through its Members app, focusing on Qi2 standard features. One question asks if having Qi2, similar to Apple’s MagSafe, would reduce inconvenience for users if wireless charging was the only option. Another question inquires if users would prefer phones to have built-in magnets, even if it meant a slightly thicker device. Users can specify how much thickness they would accept, with options of 0.3mm and 0.5mm added for consideration.

Samsung is carefully considering the trade-offs of adding full Qi2 compatibility to its devices. The company has been emphasizing thinness in its recent smartphone designs, such as the slim profiles of the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. Adding magnets for Qi2 compatibility would inevitably increase the bulk of these devices, potentially reversing the progress in slimming down.

Depending on the feedback from the survey, Samsung may introduce a magnetized Qi2 charging system in the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S26 and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 series. With Google rumored to include a similar feature in the Pixel 10 range, Samsung could be playing catch-up not just with Apple but also with other competitors in the market. Stay tuned for updates on Samsung’s Qi2 charging standard integration in future smartphones.
