Cambodia has recently taken a strong stance against criminal cybercrime operations in the country, resulting in the arrest of over 1,000 suspects. Prime Minister Hun Manet issued an order authorizing government bodies to crack down on these operations in order to maintain security, public order, and social safety.

The government’s concern stems from the threat of online scams, which are not only prevalent in Cambodia but also globally. Foreign criminal groups have infiltrated the country to engage in these illegal activities, prompting the need for decisive action.

Raids conducted in at least five provinces led to the arrest of suspects from various nationalities, including Vietnamese, Chinese, Taiwanese, and Cambodians. Police seized equipment such as computers and mobile phones during these operations, highlighting the scale of the cybercrime operations in the country.

In Poipet, a town on the border with Thailand known for cyberscam and gambling activities, 270 Indonesians, including women, were arrested. Additionally, arrests were made in other provinces, with suspects from Thailand, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Myanmar, and Vietnam being apprehended.

Amnesty International recently conducted an investigation into cybercrime in Cambodia, revealing state complicity in abuses carried out by Chinese criminal gangs. The organization highlighted human rights abuses such as slavery, human trafficking, and torture associated with these criminal enterprises.

The crackdown on cybercrime comes amidst a heated feud between Cambodia and Thailand over border territory. Tensions have escalated with border closures and nationalistic insults being exchanged. Thailand’s actions, including cutting off electricity supplies and closing crossing points, have exacerbated the situation, with Cambodia accusing its neighbor of retaliatory measures.

The crackdown on cybercrime operations in Cambodia is a significant step towards combating illegal activities in the country. By taking decisive action and apprehending suspects involved in online scams, the government is working towards maintaining security and public safety.
