Man Fatally Shot After Sidewalk Scuffle in Austin

A tragic incident unfolded in Austin on July 12, resulting in the death of 53-year-old Jeffrey Hicks at the hands of 20-year-old Donnell Wyatt. The altercation, captured on surveillance footage, began with a verbal dispute between the two men outside their shared apartment building in the 5600 block of West Division Street. The confrontation quickly escalated, leading to a fatal outcome.

According to Assistant State’s Attorney Mike Pekara, Wyatt and Hicks exchanged heated words earlier in the evening, with Hicks allegedly insulting Wyatt before the latter walked away. However, Wyatt returned moments later, reigniting the conflict. The situation became physical when Hicks grabbed Wyatt by the neck and pushed him into the building entrance. A struggle ensued, and both men ended up on the sidewalk.

Despite having a chance to escape, Wyatt made a fatal decision to turn back and confront Hicks. Pulling out a gun, Wyatt fired a single shot at Hicks, striking him in the chest. Hicks fell to the ground, defenseless. Shockingly, Wyatt then circled back, pointed the gun at Hicks a second time, but was deterred by a witness, who pleaded for him not to shoot again.

Paramedics rushed Hicks to the hospital, but the single gunshot wound proved fatal. No weapon was found on Hicks or in the vicinity, confirming his unarmed status throughout the incident. Eyewitnesses corroborated this fact, emphasizing that Hicks posed no threat.

Two days after the shooting, Wyatt was apprehended by police. Despite initially providing false information, he eventually confessed to the crime, claiming self-defense. Prosecutors also revealed Wyatt’s criminal history, which included a prior conviction for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in 2022, as well as juvenile offenses for robbery and unlawful use of a weapon.

Donnell Wyatt now faces a charge of first-degree murder for the senseless killing of Jeffrey Hicks. The community mourns the loss of a life and seeks justice for the victim.
