The Gore District Council has officially lifted the do not drink notice on the township’s water supply after three consecutive days of testing below the national limit.

Since Friday, the municipal water supply had been deemed unsafe for consumption after a monthly sample exceeded drinking water standards.

According to spokesperson Jason Domigan, levels in one well are still elevated compared to normal, prompting the council to collaborate with Environment Southland and water regulator Taumata Arowai to identify the source of the spike.

Elevated nitrate levels, especially concerning for pregnant women and formula-fed babies, have also been associated with an increased risk of bowel cancer based on international research.

To ensure the safety of tap water, the council advises that if taps have been used for showers, baths, or toilets, the water is likely safe for consumption. Otherwise, running the tap for a few minutes before drinking or brushing teeth is recommended.

For residents who prefer access to alternative water sources, a water tanker will be stationed at Eccles St Playground for the next few days.
