A shocking incident unfolded at the Brookhaven Aquatic Center in Shirley, Long Island on Sunday night, as Suffolk County police responded to reports of a gunshot and discovered an underground “fight club” in progress. Thirteen individuals were arrested in connection with the unauthorized event, most of whom were between the ages of 16 and 20.

The chaos ensued when a participant brandished a gun during a scuffle and fired blank shots, resulting in injuries to two individuals aged 17 and 19. Both victims were promptly transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. Among the arrested individuals, Devine Brown, 25, of Mastic Beach, faces charges of assault, menacing, prohibitive use of a weapon, and unlawful assembly. He is currently in custody and is set to be arraigned on Monday.

This disturbing incident marks the second time in recent weeks that Suffolk County police have intervened in the dismantling of an underground fighting ring. In June, three men were charged after a similar unauthorized brawl was uncovered at Walt Whitman Park in Melville, which had been promoted on social media and attracted a crowd of approximately 70 attendees, primarily in their early 20s.

The concept of clandestine organized brawls has been popularized in popular culture, notably by the 1996 novel “Fight Club” by Chuck Palahniuk, which was inspired by the author’s own involvement in such activities. The book was subsequently adapted into a critically acclaimed film in 1999, starring Edward Norton and Brad Pitt.

The reckless behavior exhibited at the Brookhaven Aquatic Center serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with illegal and violent activities. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident, and further details may be released as the case unfolds.
