Acclaimed photographer and filmmaker Misan Harriman has recently taken on the role of executive producer for the BBC Storyville documentary “White Man Walking.” The film follows filmmaker Rob Bliss as he embarks on a poignant journey through America’s racially charged landscape, wearing a Black Lives Matter t-shirt in the aftermath of George Floyd’s tragic death. From rural highways to small towns in the Deep South, Bliss encounters a range of reactions to his simple act of solidarity, shedding light on the nation’s deep-seated ideological divisions while also capturing moments of genuine human connection.

Harriman’s involvement in the project brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the table. Known for his powerful photography documenting the Black Lives Matter protests in London, Harriman made history as the first Black male photographer to shoot a cover for British Vogue. His directorial debut “The After,” starring David Oyelowo, even earned him an Academy Award nomination.

Speaking about his involvement in “White Man Walking,” Harriman expressed his pride in being part of a project that delves into themes of power, privilege, and allyship in a thought-provoking and challenging way. He emphasized the importance of truth-telling over comfort, highlighting the documentary’s mission to spark conversations and promote understanding.

The film, co-directed by Rob Bliss and Grierson Award winner Denise Alder, raises important questions about the intense reactions that advocating for Black lives can evoke, especially in economically disadvantaged rural white communities. With a focus on empathy and understanding, “White Man Walking” aims to foster dialogue and bridge divides.

Produced by Osun Group in association with Doc Hearts and commissioned by BBC Storyville, the documentary has garnered praise for its bold and impactful storytelling. With international distribution handled by Mediawan Rights, the film has already aired on BBC Four and Arte in Germany and France, and is currently available for viewing on BBC iPlayer.

The production team behind “White Man Walking” includes industry veterans such as BAFTA winner Andy Mundy-Castle and Emmy nominee Maxine Watson as executive producers, with Georgia Cassidy as producer and Emmy winner Jordan Montminy as editor. Associate director Afua Hirsch brings her expertise to the project, ensuring a well-rounded and compelling narrative.

Overall, “White Man Walking” stands as a powerful exploration of race, privilege, and humanity in America, with Harriman’s unique perspective and artistic vision adding depth and resonance to the documentary. Its compelling storytelling and commitment to social justice make it a must-watch for audiences seeking to engage with important issues facing society today.
