When Thom Tillis, the Republican Senator from North Carolina, announced he would not seek reelection in 2026, it was akin to opening a door wide enough for Democrats to waltz right in.

The Democratic leadership has been actively courting former Governor Roy Cooper to step into the ring, and reports indicate that he is set to make his campaign official this coming Monday.

Axios has reported:

Former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper (D) is gearing up to launch his Senate campaign next week, according to multiple sources.

This move marks Cooper as the Democratic Party’s prime candidate for 2026, significantly enhancing their prospects of flipping a crucial Senate seat from Republican hands. With his popularity as a two-term governor, Cooper is poised to become the Democratic frontrunner in the race for the open Senate seat.

…

Now, the Democrats await a decision from Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of former President Trump, who holds what could be viewed as the first right of refusal on the GOP side.

Despite Donald Trump encouraging Lara to run, one must ponder the wisdom of placing her in a race against a well-liked former governor, especially with the Trump brand currently swimming in a sea of unfavorable approval ratings. Such a matchup would undoubtedly present a tantalizing opportunity for Democrats.

In reality, even if Lara Trump were to enter the race, Cooper would likely remain the favorite.

The stakes for this North Carolina Senate seat are high; flipping it could reduce the Republican majority to a mere three seats. Given the number of ties that have required Vice President JD Vance to intervene, gaining this seat could enable Democrats to collaborate with Republican moderates to thwart aspects of Trump’s agenda.

While candidate recruitment alone does not determine electoral outcomes, the absence of strong candidates can certainly lead to missed opportunities. Roy Cooper, as a seasoned candidate, signals that Democrats perceive 2026 as a year ripe for potential gains.
