Chicago Man Sentenced for Flash Mob Theft at Louis Vuitton Store

A Chicago man, Michael Bibbs, was sentenced on Thursday for his involvement in a flash mob theft that resulted in the theft of an estimated $210,000 worth of designer handbags from a Louis Vuitton store inside River North’s Nordstrom almost two years ago.

Michael Bibbs, who is 20 years old, received a five-year sentence from Judge Natosha Toller after pleading guilty to theft of $100,000 to $500,000. This sentencing comes in the wake of another recent mob attack at a different Louis Vuitton store on the Magnificent Mile, where approximately $150,000 worth of merchandise was stolen.

The incident took place on November 15, 2023, just before 8 p.m. A group of ten individuals, all wearing face masks, hoodies, and gloves, rode an escalator up to the Louis Vuitton section inside Nordstrom located at 55 East Grand, as reported by the Chicago police.

Without uttering a word or brandishing any weapons, the group swiftly grabbed about 45 purses from the display shelves. Each handbag had a retail value ranging from $3,000 to $11,000, resulting in a total loss of $210,380 for the store. The entire theft lasted a mere 26 seconds.

Although the perpetrators were seen wearing gloves, they left behind razor wire fragments, possibly intended to disable security tethers. After snatching the bags, they made a quick exit down the escalator and fled east on Grand Avenue.

Surveillance footage of the heist, shared on Twitter by Chicago Critter, showcased the group’s synchronized operation.

The following day, before Bibbs was identified in connection with the theft, Chicago police spotted him driving a stolen Jeep Cherokee in the wrong direction. He collided with another vehicle and a house in the 5800 block of South Morgan before attempting to flee on foot. Bibbs was eventually apprehended hiding in bushes near a railroad track.

During a search of the stolen Jeep, law enforcement discovered two handguns—one modified to fire automatically like a machine gun and another with an extended magazine. As a result, Bibbs received concurrent prison sentences of three and five years for illegal possession of firearms and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

With good behavior and credit for the 617 days he spent in custody awaiting trial, Bibbs is expected to be eligible for parole in just over nine months.
