64-Year-Old Man Detained for Attempted Murder and Arson in Uptown

A shocking incident unfolded in Uptown this week as a 64-year-old man, Steven Carter, was arrested for allegedly attempting to set another man on fire inside a tent. The victim, a 56-year-old homeless man, was left traumatized by the terrifying ordeal that took place around 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday in the 4500 block of North Lake Shore Drive.

The victim recounted that he was asleep in his tent when Carter aggressively demanded his belongings by kicking at the tent and yelling. The situation escalated when Carter started pouring rubbing alcohol on the tent. In a state of panic, the victim poked his head out of the tent to inquire about the disturbance, only to have Carter splash alcohol directly onto his face while threatening to set both the tent and the victim on fire.

Without hesitation, Carter proceeded to light a match and threw it at the tent, engulfing it in flames with the victim still trapped inside. The victim’s survival instincts kicked in as he managed to escape the burning tent, narrowly avoiding a potentially fatal outcome.

Law enforcement officers swiftly responded to the scene and apprehended Carter, who matched the description provided by witnesses. Shockingly, Carter admitted to the heinous act, confessing that he had acquired matches and a lighter along with the alcohol used in the attack a few days prior.

During a court hearing, Judge Ankur Srivastava approved the state’s request to keep Carter in custody pending further legal proceedings. The gravity of the charges, including attempted first-degree murder and aggravated arson, underscore the severity of Carter’s actions and the danger he poses to society.

This disturbing incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by individuals experiencing homelessness and the urgent need for compassion and support within our communities. As the case unfolds, authorities will continue to investigate the motives behind Carter’s senseless act of violence and ensure that justice is served for the victim.
