PoliticusUSA stands as one of the few independent voices amid a sea of mainstream media that seems to have capitulated to the whims of Trumpism. We invite you to support our mission by becoming a subscriber.

Why the Aversion to the Biden Administration?

According to the very journalists covering the White House, the disdain for Biden stems from his administration’s unexpected competence, limited media access, and a lack of opportunities for personal career advancement, such as book deals.

One journalist, reflecting on their experience, lamented to Politico:

“Jen [Psaki] is exceptionally skilled at her role, which is regrettable,” said a reporter who has covered both the Obama and Trump administrations. “The job has become significantly less gratifying, as you’re not battling to save democracy from Sean Spicer and his Men’s Wearhouse ensemble. Going toe-to-toe with Jen makes one look like a fool.”

This quote uncovers a couple of pivotal truths: mainstream journalists often prefer a disorganized administration that provides them with a narrative of heroism and conflict.

During Trump’s first term, widespread anxiety and disorder translated into lavish profits for media outlets, as the chaos provided a fertile ground for book deals and sensational reporting. The media ecosystem thrived on the tumult surrounding Trump, as fear and uncertainty about his presidency were lucrative for those chronicling his administration.

The irony is palpable: these same journalists had a vested interest in a Trump comeback, which explains the relentless coverage of his post-presidency and the media’s swift push to displace Biden in the 2024 race.

But in a classic case of “be careful what you wish for,” the media’s aspirations have backfired. As Trump’s potential return loomed, there was a buzz in the air reminiscent of a stock market rally—“the Trump bump,” they called it—where they anticipated a resurgence in viewership and revenue. They believed that fear would once again propel their ratings and restore them to their previous glory.

What actually unfolded was a disenchanted audience that largely tuned out. The anticipated ratings bonanza failed to materialize, leaving the media to grapple with the reality that their audience had moved on.
