Dating app hook-ups turning into armed robberies in Bronzeville have Chicago police issuing a warning to residents. The series of incidents involved men meeting up with individuals they connected with on dating apps, only to be led into a trap at an apartment building on South Drexel Boulevard. Once inside, the victims were confronted by armed men who proceeded to rob them, with some victims even sustaining injuries. In a disturbing twist, the offenders used the victims’ cell phones to access and transfer money from their bank accounts.
The robberies took place on three separate occasions in July, all at the same location on South Drexel Boulevard. The suspects, described as two to four Black men between the ages of 19 and 25, were all dressed in black clothing and masks. Chicago police are urging individuals to exercise caution when meeting strangers from dating apps, advising them to arrange first-time meetings in public places and inform someone of their whereabouts.
This is not the first time dating apps have been used as a guise for criminal activities. In a previous incident, Antoine Perteet from Waukegan was charged with using Grindr to lure victims into armed robbery and kidnapping schemes in Rogers Park and Cicero. Another case involved two migrants accused of robbing and murdering a man on the Northwest Side after connecting with him on Grindr. And in a particularly heinous incident, a man from Whiting, Indiana, was brutally attacked with a hammer during an app hook-up gone wrong in West Pullman.
