In the upcoming presidential election, the education policies of the candidates will play a crucial role in shaping the future of our classrooms. Each candidate, including Kamala Harris, Tim Walz, Donald Trump, and J.D. Vance, has put forth their own vision for education in America.

Kamala Harris, the current Vice President, has garnered support from the American Federation of Teachers for her commitment to promoting Head Start and Title 1 programs, increasing teacher pay, and opposing book bans. Harris has a history of advocating for better conditions in classrooms, expanded teacher agency, and increased funding for programs like Title I and Head Start. She has also championed initiatives to support historically black colleges and universities and improve STEM education for underrepresented minorities.

Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota and a former educator, is known as the “Education Governor” for his dedication to public education. He has advocated for fully funding the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and has made headlines for his efforts to provide free menstrual products in school bathrooms to combat period poverty. Walz’s commitment to equality and access to education for all students sets him apart as a champion for public schools.

On the other hand, former President Donald Trump’s education plan focuses on vouchers for private schools, eliminating the Department of Education, and cutting back on public school funding. Trump’s plan also includes eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, promoting merit pay over tenure, and ending the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. His policies have been criticized for prioritizing private education and homeschooling over public schools.

J.D. Vance, a candidate aligned with Trump’s vision for education, has voiced support for eliminating Head Start and the Department of Education, implementing universal school choice, and arming teachers. Vance’s stance on school safety and gun control includes opposing “Red Flag” laws and advocating for teachers to carry concealed weapons, sparking controversy and concern among educators.

As educators, it is essential to stay informed about the education policies proposed by each candidate and how they may impact our students and classrooms. Your vote in the upcoming election will have a direct impact on the future of education in America. Take the time to research each candidate’s education platform, understand their priorities, and make an informed decision when casting your vote. The future of education is in your hands, so make your voice heard at the polls.
