The search is set to continue today for Roy Arbon, a West Coast beekeeper with a remarkable past. Arbon, who assisted in recovering bodies after the Erebus air disaster and later fell victim to a drug smuggling scam, has gone missing while on a tramp near Greymouth at the age of 75.

Concerns have been raised by the police regarding Arbon’s welfare as he is overdue from a solo walk between Mt Davy and Mt Sewell, which he embarked on last Wednesday. He may be dressed in a blue puffer jacket, shorts, and hiking boots, although this information is yet to be confirmed.

Despite his experience as a hiker, worries have intensified due to his prolonged absence, lack of communication, and the cold weather conditions,” said a police representative.

Hero of Erebus and Cave Creek

Arbon’s involvement in the recovery efforts following the Erebus tragedy in 1979 is well-documented. Working for the Antarctic division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, he played a crucial role in the recovery operation. Reflecting on the harrowing experience, Arbon remembered the smell of unburnt aviation fuel lingering in the air.

Additionally, Arbon assisted in the erection of a memorial cross at the crash site in challenging weather conditions. Years later, he was also part of the team that recovered the bodies of those who perished in the Cave Creek viewing platform collapse.

Entangled in a Drug Scam

Arbon’s life took a drastic turn when he became entangled in an international drug smuggling scheme. Transporting a suitcase from Brazil to Australia unknowingly containing over 2kg of cocaine, he was detained and later acquitted after a trial in Western Australia. His story was later featured in the documentary “The Scam.”

Authorities urge anyone with information on Arbon’s whereabouts to contact the police on 105, quoting job number P063265345.
