The World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai saw Chinese Premier Li Qiang taking the stage to announce a global action plan for artificial intelligence. This move by China marks a significant step in the ongoing tech race between the world’s leading economies.

In a bid for international cooperation on tech development and regulation, China proposed the establishment of a global AI cooperation organization. This announcement came amidst the backdrop of the U.S. unveiling its own action plan for AI, which included initiatives to address bias in AI models and support the deployment of American tech overseas.

According to George Chen, a partner at the Asia Group, the formation of two distinct camps in the AI race is becoming evident. China is advocating for a multilateral approach, while the U.S. is focusing on building its own camp to counter China’s advancements in AI technology.

Premier Li highlighted China’s “AI plus” strategy, emphasizing the integration of AI across various industries. China also expressed its willingness to assist other nations, particularly those in the Global South, with AI technology. This inclusive approach aims to support less developed economies outside of traditional Western spheres of influence.

The ongoing semiconductor restrictions imposed by the U.S. on China have prompted the development of homegrown alternatives by the Chinese tech industry. Nvidia, a major U.S. chipmaker, recently resumed shipments of a less advanced chip to China after a temporary halt. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang commended China’s progress in developing formidable alternatives during his recent visit to the country.

In a separate development, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt met with Shanghai Party Secretary Chen Jining ahead of the AI conference. This meeting signifies the growing importance of AI collaborations between tech giants and Chinese authorities.

The tech race between the U.S. and China is intensifying, with both countries vying for dominance in the AI sector. China’s push for global cooperation and innovation in AI technology sets the stage for a new chapter in the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.
