U.K. Law Mandating Age Verification on Pornography Websites Now in Effect

A new law in the United Kingdom requiring pornography websites to verify the age of their users went into effect on Friday.

According to a report by BBC News, approximately 6,000 pornographic websites have committed to implementing age verification measures to comply with the Online Safety Act. However, as of Friday morning, at least one major website was found to be not enforcing age checks.

In addition to age verification, the Online Safety Act also mandates that online platforms must take measures to protect children from harmful content. As a result, popular sites like Reddit, Bluesky, X, and Grindr have begun prompting users in the U.K. to verify their age using methods like selfies or government-issued identification.

The implementation of these age verification measures in the U.K. could set a precedent for similar regulations globally, as highlighted by a Wired article. However, some organizations, including the Electronic Frontier Foundation, have raised concerns about the impact of such measures on online privacy and anonymity. Notably, a recent security breach involving the dating safety app Tea exposed selfies and digital IDs uploaded for verification purposes.

Despite the new regulations, there are concerns that some internet users may attempt to circumvent age verification checks by using fake IDs, images of fictional characters, or virtual private networks (VPNs).
