Aquila Clean Energy Pacific has informed Kurow residents about their plans to collaborate with two local landowners to develop a wind farm on Kurow Hill — Te Kohurau. The hill, standing at 593m with a distinctive flat top, overlooks the township and is situated in front of the St Marys Range.
The company has distributed a flyer to residents, expressing their intention to engage with “interested parties,” including nearby residents and local authorities. It is believed that the wind farm, spanning 1800ha across two properties behind Kurow, will consist of up to 24 turbines.
According to Aquila, initial studies have shown consistent and strong wind conditions in the area, making it a suitable location for a wind farm. The proposed turbines are expected to have a maximum tip height of 200m and a rotor diameter of 160m.
The connection to the National Grid has been deemed technically feasible, and preliminary planning and environmental assessments have indicated that wind generation in the region is viable.
Some local residents have raised concerns about the project, citing the potential visual impact on the landscape and the town of Kurow. Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher mentioned that while the idea has sparked speculation, the decision on the project’s location will be subject to a proper resource consent process.
As discussions progress, Aquila plans to engage in consultations with the community to address any concerns and gather feedback. The company’s initiative aligns with the country’s goal of increasing renewable energy sources, but it will be crucial to ensure that proper measures are in place to protect the environment and the local community.
