Winter driving: ‘Is three minutes worth your safety?’

The Rental Vehicle Association is warning motorists to exercise caution on the roads during the cold winter days, as conditions are becoming increasingly challenging.

Chief executive Ben McFadgen emphasized that New Zealand’s highways are not like the expansive expressways in Europe, making driving conditions hazardous at times.

McFadgen expressed concern over the tendency for Kiwis to drive too fast on the roads, whether in their own vehicles or rental cars. He stressed the importance of driving at a safe speed to prevent accidents and ensure a pleasant journey.

He pointed out that driving slightly faster only saves a minimal amount of time, urging drivers to prioritize safety over rushing to their destination. McFadgen advised all travelers, including international tourists, to plan ahead and be prepared for challenging road conditions, particularly in areas prone to heavy rain and flooding like Nelson-Tasman.

Special attention was given to ski access roads, where descending steep slopes can put a strain on brakes. McFadgen recommended descending slowly and carefully to avoid brake fade and overheating.

In conclusion, McFadgen urged all drivers to adopt a defensive driving approach, be mindful of the conditions, and prioritize safety on the roads.
