Mayor Eric Adams criticized former Governor Andrew Cuomo for resigning amidst sexual harassment allegations and then running for mayor as an independent, accusing him of using a familiar political playbook. Adams, attending the 75th anniversary celebration of NYCHA Bronx River Houses, expressed his belief that personal struggles should not force someone out of office. He highlighted his own resilience in the face of adversity, referencing his dismissal of historic bribery and fraud charges earlier this year.

Cuomo, who faced allegations of sexual harassment and criticism for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in nursing homes, was accused by Adams of attempting to undermine black politicians to regain power. Adams, also running as an independent, accused Cuomo of trying to disrupt his mayoral campaign.

Cuomo entered the mayoral race as an independent after losing to Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani in the Democratic primary. Adams criticized Cuomo’s spending on legal defense amid the nursing home controversy and vowed to rectify the issues left behind by his predecessor.

Adams continued to challenge Cuomo’s actions and decisions, highlighting the discrepancy in nursing home death toll reporting and accusing Cuomo of neglecting his responsibilities. The two politicians clashed over their respective approaches to the mayoral race, with Cuomo defending his decision to run as an independent.

As the mayoral race intensifies, both candidates are gearing up for the general election, each confident in their ability to secure victory. Cuomo remains steadfast in his campaign strategy, aiming to garner support from voters who previously backed him in the primary.
