U.S. Insurance Giant Allianz Life Confirms Data Breach

Recently, Allianz Life, a prominent U.S. insurance company, acknowledged to JS that a significant data breach occurred in mid-July, resulting in the theft of personal information belonging to the majority of its customers, financial professionals, and employees.

Allianz Life spokesperson Brett Weinberg confirmed the breach when contacted by JS, revealing that on July 16, 2025, a malicious actor gained unauthorized access to a third-party cloud-based CRM system utilized by the company. This breach led to the exposure of personally identifiable information of a large portion of Allianz Life’s clientele and staff through a social engineering technique.

The company promptly disclosed the breach in compliance with legal obligations by filing a report with Maine’s attorney general. Despite having 1.4 million customers, Allianz Life did not disclose the exact number of individuals affected by the breach, although its parent company, Allianz, serves over 125 million customers globally.

Following the breach, Allianz Life informed the FBI and assured that there was no evidence of compromise to any other systems within its network. However, they did not disclose whether they had received any communication from the hackers, including a potential ransom note, nor did they attribute the breach to a specific hacking group.

Notably, Allianz Life is just one of several insurance companies targeted in a recent surge of cyberattacks within the industry. This includes Aflac, another significant provider of supplementary health insurance. Security researchers at Google have linked these attacks to Scattered Spider, a group known for utilizing social engineering techniques to infiltrate networks.

Prior to targeting insurance companies, Scattered Spider had previously focused on the U.K. retail industry, aviation, transportation sectors, and even Silicon Valley technology giants.

According to a filing in Maine, Allianz plans to notify affected individuals starting from around August 1st.
