A $1,000 Reward Offered for Information on Fatal Hit-and-Run in Pilsen

Authorities are offering a $1,000 cash reward for any information that leads to the arrest or indictment of the driver responsible for a fatal hit-and-run crash in Pilsen. The incident occurred last weekend, resulting in the death of a 22-year-old woman and serious injuries to her fiancé.

Details of the Crash

The tragic crash occurred at around 11:18 p.m. on July 19 in the 2000 block of South Ashland Avenue. The Chicago Police Department reported that a dark-colored Dodge Journey struck the couple as they were crossing Ashland in the north crosswalk at Cullerton Street. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene without stopping.

Witnesses described seeing the SUV speeding past other vehicles before hitting the victims in the crosswalk. The victims, identified as Marcella Herrera, 22, and her fiancé, Mauricio Leyva, 21, were found lying on the Ashland Avenue median. Herrera succumbed to her injuries, while Leyva suffered facial injuries, including a broken nose, and possible back injuries.

Seeking Information

The vehicle involved in the hit-and-run has a broken right headlight and potential damage to the front right bumper and quarter panel. It was last spotted turning west onto 19th Street from Ashland. Anyone with information is urged to contact the CPD Major Accidents Unit at 312-745-4521 or submit an anonymous tip at CPDTIP.com, referencing case number JJ340954.

Cook County Crime Stoppers is also offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the apprehension of the driver. Tipsters can provide information anonymously by calling 800-535-STOP or emailing tips@cookcountycrimestoppers.org.
