The 2025 World Artificial Intelligence Conference commenced in Shanghai, showcasing the latest advancements in AI technology. Chinese companies are at the forefront of developing smarter and more cost-effective AI models, following in the footsteps of DeepSeek’s groundbreaking innovations.

One such company, Z.ai (formerly Zhipu), unveiled its GLM-4.5 AI model, which is not only cheaper to use than DeepSeek but also incorporates “agentic” AI capabilities. This unique feature allows the model to autonomously break down tasks into sub-tasks for improved accuracy. Moreover, Z.ai’s GLM-4.5 is open-sourced, enabling developers to freely access and utilize the technology.

Unlike DeepSeek’s model, which requires a significant hardware investment, GLM-4.5 operates efficiently with just eight Nvidia H20 chips. Nvidia recently received approval to resume sales of these chips to China, further facilitating the adoption of AI technologies in the region.

Z.ai aims to disrupt the market by offering competitive pricing for its AI model. With training costs significantly lower than DeepSeek’s, Z.ai charges a fraction of the price per million input and output tokens. This affordability makes cutting-edge AI technology accessible to a wider range of users and developers.

In a strategic move, Z.ai is planning an IPO in Greater China, attracting investments from tech giants like Alibaba and Tencent, as well as prominent venture capital firms. The company’s innovative approach to AI development has garnered attention from global players and regulatory authorities alike.

At the World AI Conference, other Chinese companies also showcased their advancements in AI technology. Tencent introduced the HunyuanWorld-1.0 model for creating three-dimensional game scenes, while Alibaba unveiled the Qwen3-Coder model for coding applications. These innovations underscore China’s commitment to driving AI innovation and shaping the future of technology.

Overall, the rise of Chinese AI companies like Z.ai signals a new era of innovation and competitiveness in the AI industry. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and strategic partnerships, these companies are poised to lead the next wave of AI development and revolutionize the way we interact with technology.
