In the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, a new type of weapon has emerged – solar-powered ambush drones. These small racing quadcopters, also known as first-person-view drones or FPVs, are now equipped with solar cells, allowing them to wait for extended periods to ambush targets, effectively turning them into a new form of land mine.

According to Robert Bunker from US consultancy firm C/O Futures, these drones can strategically position themselves near roads or choke points, lying in wait for a target before swiftly moving in for an attack.

Traditionally, drone ambushes involved drones landing and waiting for a target, but limited battery life restricted their operational window. However, Russian FPV ambush drones with solar charging panels have been identified, enabling them to sustain their electronics even when stationary. Ukrainian drone warfare expert Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov shared images of these solar-equipped drones, highlighting the evolving nature of drone warfare.

While the current solar panels may impact the drone’s aerodynamics, future iterations are expected to be more advanced. Bunker suggests that drones could feature solar rolls that unfold to create a charging surface post-landing, enhancing their operational capabilities.

With solar assistance, these drones can remain in position for extended periods, recharging during the day and resuming their vigil at night. Moreover, the integration of artificial intelligence in drones allows for autonomous target identification and engagement, potentially saturating the battlefield with lethal units.

Unlike traditional landmines, solar-enabled drones offer a dynamic and self-repairing defense mechanism. As advancements continue, these ambush drones could become a ubiquitous presence on the battlefield, reshaping modern warfare strategies.
