Willie Greenwood (Chicago Police Department, Bally’s)

Man Charged with Robbing and Beating Casino Customers in Chicago

A man named Willie Greenwood, 27, has been charged with multiple robbery cases involving victims who had recently visited casinos in Chicago. Greenwood’s criminal activities have escalated, with him facing charges of robbing and beating a Bally’s casino customer in River North, while being on pretrial release for robbing casino shuttle bus riders in Chinatown.

Previous Robbery Cases

In March, Greenwood was initially ordered detained for robbing casino shuttle bus riders in Chinatown. However, Judge Timothy Joyce decided to release him a month later without requiring an ankle monitor, which ultimately led to more criminal incidents.

During the Chinatown robbery case, Chicago police officers spotted Greenwood in a black Hyundai Tucson matching the suspect’s vehicle description. They found a BB gun pistol in the car, and shortly after, a security officer reported a 65-year-old man being robbed at gunpoint by a masked individual fitting Greenwood’s description.

Surveillance footage showed Greenwood running down the street around the time of the robbery, and he was found with $400, including the exact amount stolen from the victim. Despite being detained initially, Greenwood was released by Judge Joyce.

Recent Robbery Incidents

On June 6, Greenwood allegedly robbed a 40-year-old casino customer in River North, demanding money and then physically assaulting the victim before stealing $2,500 in cash and credit cards. The victim required medical attention due to the severity of the attack.

Following this incident, prosecutors charged Greenwood with another casino-related robbery in Chinatown in March, where he attacked a 48-year-old man, demanded money, and displayed a handgun before stealing approximately $200.

Judicial Response

After the recent violent robbery in River North, Judge James Murphy III ordered Greenwood to be detained on the latest allegations, noting that he had been released on a pending armed robbery charge and had committed another violent crime. The series of robberies committed by Greenwood highlight the need for a thorough review of pretrial release decisions and monitoring protocols.
