Whangārei Boys’ High School has been ordered to pay over $500,000 in reparations to the victims of a tragic caving incident, which resulted in the loss of a 15-year-old boy’s life. The school was sentenced in the Whangārei District Court on two charges brought by WorkSafe for endangering lives.

The incident occurred during a school trip to Abbey Caves, where Karnin Ahorangi Petera lost his life on May 9, 2023. Despite a starting fine of $600,000, the school board was unable to pay, leading to a remittance by Judge Greg Davis. Concerns were raised about the impact of a fine on the school’s ability to educate students, especially those who were part of the ill-fated trip.

During the sentencing, the court heard emotional statements from the parents of the victim, Andre Petera and Alicia Toki, detailing the devastating effects of their son’s death. Described as a vibrant and adventurous young man, Karnin tragically drowned in the flooded cave while his classmates and teachers managed to escape.

The parents expressed their frustrations with the school’s handling of the trip, particularly in light of the heavy rainfall that day. Despite raising concerns about the weather, they were assured of their son’s safety. The tragic events unfolded as Petera received alarming calls about students trapped in the cave, eventually leading to the heartbreaking discovery of his son’s body.

The couple shared how the loss of their son had impacted their lives, from health issues to strained relationships. They emphasized the need for improved safety measures in outdoor education, urging the school and the Ministry of Education to prioritize student safety in such activities.

As they continue to grieve the loss of their beloved son, Petera and Toki hope that no other family will have to endure the same tragedy, calling for greater accountability and precautions in educational outings.
