The city of Danville, Virginia, was rocked by a horrifying incident involving City Councilman Lee Vogler, who was brutally set on fire by a known assailant. The attack, which police deemed personal, left Vogler with severe burns covering up to 60% of his body. Despite the trauma, Vogler’s wife, Blair, described him as a “fighter” who is bravely facing this challenge with courage and determination.

Vogler, a four-term councilman and the youngest-ever elected in Danville, was targeted at his workplace, Showcase Magazine, where the assailant, Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes, doused him with gasoline before setting him ablaze. Hayes was charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated malicious wounding after confessing to intending to kill Vogler.

Blair Vogler expressed her gratitude to the community for their support during this difficult time, acknowledging the tireless work and unwavering commitment her husband has shown in serving the city. She highlighted Vogler’s dedication to his responsibilities and his love for his family, city, and its people.

The attack, while not politically motivated, has shaken the community and raised concerns about safety and security. Vogler remains hospitalized with severe burns, undergoing surgery at a North Carolina hospital. The family has requested privacy as he continues to heal and recover from this traumatic ordeal.

As the investigation into the attack continues, the people of Danville stand in solidarity with the Vogler family, offering their thoughts and prayers for his speedy recovery. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by public officials in fulfilling their duties and the importance of community support in times of crisis.
