Following a powerful earthquake in Russia, a tsunami advisory alert issued for New Zealand has been lifted after two days. The 8.8 magnitude tremor on the far eastern side of Russia had triggered tsunami warnings and alerts for nations near the Pacific Ocean.

As of 8 am today, the National Emergency Management Authority reported that beach and marine tsunami conditions were observed along the east coast of New Zealand last night. These conditions have now subsided to strong and unusual currents. The national advisory for the North and South Islands has been lifted, although strong currents will persist for the next 20 to 48 hours.

However, the National Advisory for a beach and marine threat remains in place for the Chatham Islands, located 862km east of Christchurch. NEMA has warned that strong currents and surges pose a risk of injury and drowning to swimmers, surfers, fishermen, and anyone near the shore. People in these areas are advised to move out of the water and away from beaches, harbors, marinas, rivers, and estuaries.

Further updates regarding the situation in the Chatham Islands are expected later today.
