Today, the Lawrence Rodeo grounds will be buzzing with excitement as over 25 sausage dogs are set to participate in the Lawrence Dachshund Derby, a fun-filled community event sparked by new resident Olivia Montgomery.
What started as a simple idea has now turned into a much-anticipated spectacle that promises fun for everyone, especially the kids.
Ms Montgomery, the mastermind behind the event, shared her excitement, saying, “I thought, why not? It’s a bit of fun. Something everyone can enjoy, especially the kids.”
Her own dachshund, Obie, has been diligently preparing for the race, which will see heats of up to five dogs racing over a 40m course.
With participants coming from all over the South Island, the Lawrence Dachshund Derby is shaping up to be a grand affair, complete with food stalls, a craft fair, and of course, plenty of canine excitement.
Entry to the event is just $20 for competitors, while spectators can enjoy the show for just a gold coin at the gate.
Ms Montgomery emphasized that the derby is more than just a race – it’s a celebration of community and a chance for everyone to come together and have a good time.
She expressed her hopes for the event to become an annual tradition, bringing joy to the Lawrence community for years to come.
