The recent targeted attack on Virginia city councilman Lee Vogler has shocked the community, with reports indicating that he suffered severe burns across more than half of his body. According to police and local sources, the attack was personal in nature and carried out by a maniac who allegedly intended to kill Vogler.

Vogler, a dedicated public servant and father of two, was airlifted to a North Carolina hospital where he was set to undergo surgery for burns covering up to 60% of his body, mostly on his torso. His wife, Blair, described him as a fighter who is bravely facing this challenge with courage and determination.

The assailant, Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes, 29, admitted to police that he doused Vogler with gasoline and set him on fire with the intention to kill him. Hayes was charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated malicious wounding after storming into the offices of Showcase Magazine, where Vogler worked, and carrying out the horrific attack.

Despite the harrowing incident, Vogler’s wife emphasized his love for his family, city, and its people, highlighting his integrity and dedication as a public servant. The attack, captured on video by bystanders, showcased a heroic woman who helped extinguish the flames by pouring water over Vogler and urging him to drop to the ground and roll.

Hayes, who was captured shortly after fleeing the scene, is being held without bond at Danville City Jail. Police confirmed that the attack was personal and not politically motivated, stemming from a personal matter unrelated to Vogler’s position or political affiliation.

Court records revealed that Hayes’ wife had filed for divorce just over two weeks before the attack, shedding light on a possible motive for the violent incident. Hayes is set to appear in court on September 30, with his lawyer declining to comment on the case.

The community has rallied around Vogler, showing support for his recovery and condemning the senseless act of violence that has left a dedicated public servant fighting for his life. As the investigation into the attack continues, the focus remains on justice for Vogler and ensuring the safety of all community members.
