Ecogas, a collaboration between Pioneer Energy Group and Ecostock Ltd in Central Otago, has recently been honored with the prestigious AD Hero of the Year award at the 2025 Anaerobic Digestion and Biogas Industry Awards in the UK.

The ceremony took place at the World Biogas Summit and Expo in Birmingham, celebrating outstanding achievements in the anaerobic digestion and biogas sector. Over 400 attendees gathered for the event hosted by the Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA) and the World Biogas Association.

Pioneer Energy’s venture into waste-to-energy began with the partnership with Ecostock Ltd, resulting in the establishment of Ecogas. The company’s first commercial-scale anaerobic digestion facility was launched in Reporoa, NZ in 2022, diverting over 125,000 tonnes of organic waste from landfills and producing renewable natural gas and biofertilizer.

Ecogas made history by injecting renewable natural gas into New Zealand’s gas infrastructure last year, demonstrating a significant step towards renewable energy adoption. The company has secured a contract with the Christchurch City Council to construct a second food waste-to-bioenergy facility.

Andrew Fisher, managing director of Eco Stock Supplies and a founding partner of Ecogas, proudly accepted the award in Birmingham, emphasizing the company’s commitment to sustainable practices and global recognition.

Peter McClean, CEO of Pioneer Energy Group and Ecogas, credited the company’s success to strong partnerships and a shared mission to reduce organic waste in landfills and create value for New Zealand. He expressed gratitude to partners, councils, and customers for their support.

Jeffrey Clarke, CEO of GasNZ, commended Ecogas for their remarkable achievements, highlighting their innovative approach to converting organic waste into valuable resources for energy and agriculture. He urged other communities to follow Ecogas’s lead in promoting sustainability and energy independence.

Ecogas was also recognized domestically, winning the 2025 WasteMINZ Award for excellence in resource recovery initiatives. Their dedication to environmental stewardship and renewable energy solutions continues to make a positive impact both locally and globally. — Allied Media
