Health care providers are constantly looking for ways to improve patient experiences and satisfaction. A new study conducted by researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania has revealed that simple words used in online reviews can provide valuable insights into patients’ experiences at health care facilities.

The researchers analyzed over a million Yelp reviews spanning seven years from nearly 139,000 health care facilities across the United States. By using a data analysis tool called the Differential Language Analysis ToolKit (DLATK), they were able to identify specific words and themes that were correlated with positive and negative reviews.

One of the key findings of the study was that the most common theme in negative reviews revolved around communication and administrative issues. Patients who left negative reviews often cited poor communication, payment issues, and subpar treatment as reasons for their dissatisfaction. On the other hand, positive reviews highlighted reassuring and gratifying interactions with clinicians and staff.

Interestingly, the researchers found that words like “not” and “and” were strongly associated with negative and positive reviews, respectively. Negative reviews often mentioned terms like “told,” “said,” “call,” and “asked,” indicating communication breakdowns and dissatisfaction with the overall experience. In contrast, positive reviews emphasized terms like “friendly,” “helpful,” and “kind,” highlighting the importance of compassionate care and effective communication.

The study also revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on health care reviews, with sentiments remaining subdued even after the initial crisis. However, the researchers believe that by leveraging insights from online reviews, health care facilities can make immediate changes to improve patient experiences.

Moving forward, the researchers are interested in exploring how specific facility characteristics such as size, ownership, and patient volume influence patient sentiment and communication challenges. By learning from facilities that consistently receive high ratings, they hope to identify best practices that can be adopted across the industry.

In conclusion, online reviews serve as a valuable resource for understanding patient sentiments and improving the quality of care provided by health care facilities. By paying attention to the words and themes highlighted in these reviews, providers can make meaningful changes that enhance patient experiences and satisfaction.
