Venezuelan Migrant Sentenced to Four Years in Prison for Robbery and Burglary

A Venezuelan migrant, Elio Redondo-Regas, has been sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to robbery of a victim over the age of 60 and residential burglary. The 49-year-old man’s crimes shocked the community and led to his swift arrest and subsequent sentencing by Judge Peggy Chiampas.

The series of events began on August 2, 2024, when Redondo-Regas mugged an 80-year-old woman in the 3000 block of South Wentworth. Riding up on a bicycle, he violently wrestled away her purse and even snatched her hat before making his escape. Fortunately, two brave men witnessed the attack, chased him down, and held him until the police arrived.

Despite the severity of the crime, prosecutors did not request his detention, and he was released back onto the streets. Just four days later, on August 6, Redondo-Regas committed another crime. In the early hours of the morning, a 40-year-old man caught him rummaging through his family’s home in the 6900 block of South Campbell. Redondo-Regas was found raiding the refrigerator and going through boxes in the basement before attempting to flee.

This time, a vigilant neighbor tackled him in the backyard and held him until law enforcement arrived. Prosecutors, recognizing the danger he posed to the community, successfully argued for his detention due to his recent arrival in the United States and his escalating criminal behavior.

After spending time behind bars, Redondo-Regas was sentenced to two concurrent four-year prison terms. With credit for good behavior and time served in Cook County Jail, his actual time in prison will be reduced, but justice has been served for his victims.
