“NASA’s Juno spacecraft could be sent to intercept the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS as it passes through our solar system, offering a rare opportunity for scientists to gather valuable data on this mysterious visitor from beyond. With the comet moving at an incredible speed of 60 kilometers per second, time is of the essence for researchers to devise a plan to reach it before it disappears back into the depths of space.

One proposed plan comes from Avi Loeb at Harvard University, who famously suggested that the interstellar object ‘Oumuamua may have been an alien spacecraft. In a new paper, Loeb and his colleagues propose using NASA’s Juno spacecraft, currently in orbit around Jupiter, to intercept 3I/ATLAS in March next year. While this plan presents challenges due to Juno’s age and technical issues, it could provide valuable insights into the comet.

However, experts like Mark Burchell at the University of Kent caution that Juno’s age and previous exposure to radiation could affect its ability to carry out such a mission. Despite these concerns, the potential for Juno to capture novel data on 3I/ATLAS makes it an intriguing possibility.

In addition to Juno, the ESA’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) is also being considered for a closer look at the interstellar comet. While JUICE may not be able to change course towards 3I/ATLAS, it could provide valuable data from a closer vantage point.

Other spacecraft, such as those orbiting Mars, are also being evaluated for potential flybys of 3I/ATLAS. While these missions may offer a closer view of the comet as it passes by Mars, the availability of fuel for these aging spacecraft remains a concern.

Looking to the future, the ESA’s Comet Interceptor mission, set to launch in 2029, aims to be better equipped to intercept interstellar objects. By positioning itself at a stable point between Earth and the sun, the spacecraft will be ready to race towards any comets or interstellar objects that come into view.

Despite the challenges of intercepting fast-moving interstellar objects, ongoing advancements in astronomy technology and missions like the Legacy Survey of Space and Time promise to provide earlier warnings and a better understanding of these cosmic visitors. With innovative ideas and strategic planning, scientists hope to unlock the mysteries of these elusive interstellar objects and expand our knowledge of the universe.” Even if you had a year of warning instead of a few months’ warning before perihelion, that would make a big difference,” says Snodgrass.

Imagine the scenario: scientists have just discovered a massive asteroid hurtling towards Earth, with a high probability of impact. In this hypothetical situation, we are given a year’s notice before the asteroid reaches perihelion, the point in its orbit closest to the sun. This extended warning time could potentially change the outcome of the impending impact.

One of the key factors that would come into play with a year’s warning is the ability to develop and implement a plan of action. With only a few months’ notice, the options for deflecting or mitigating the asteroid’s impact are limited. However, with a full year to prepare, scientists and experts would have the time to carefully consider and execute a strategy.

One possible course of action would be to launch a mission to intercept the asteroid and alter its trajectory. This could involve sending spacecraft equipped with propulsion systems to nudge the asteroid off course. With a year’s warning, there would be more time to plan and execute such a mission, increasing the chances of success.

Additionally, a longer warning time would allow for better coordination and collaboration among international space agencies and governments. With a year to prepare, countries around the world could work together to pool resources, share expertise, and coordinate efforts to address the threat posed by the asteroid.

Furthermore, a year’s warning would also give the general public more time to prepare and take necessary precautions. Evacuation plans could be put in place, emergency shelters could be established, and communication strategies could be developed to keep the public informed and safe.

In conclusion, the difference between having a year’s warning versus a few months’ warning before perihelion could be significant in terms of our ability to respond to an impending asteroid impact. The extra time would allow for more advanced planning, better coordination, and increased preparedness at all levels. While we hope to never face such a scenario in reality, it is important to consider the potential impact of extended warning times and the importance of being prepared for any potential threats from space.
