All Nippon Airways Completes Acquisition of Nippon Cargo Airlines
All Nippon Airways has officially acquired Nippon Cargo Airlines, marking the end of a two-year journey and solidifying their position as the world’s 14th largest airline group in terms of tonnage transported. The announcement was made late Sunday, following multiple delays in regulatory reviews that postponed the deal’s completion.
The acquisition will significantly benefit All Nippon Airways, which currently operates a fleet of six Boeing 767 freighter aircraft and two Boeing 777 freighters. By incorporating Nippon Cargo Airlines into its network, ANA will expand its international air cargo operations and enhance its services to shippers worldwide.
Nippon Cargo Airlines, on the other hand, operates eight Boeing 747-8s and owns an additional seven 747-400s leased to other carriers. The acquisition by ANA comes after Japanese ocean and transport company Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) agreed to sell NCA in March 2023 due to challenges in maintaining the fleet amidst shrinking operating margins.
Despite facing delays in obtaining approvals from various countries, the final transfer of NCA shares to ANA was completed on Friday. The financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed. ANA’s international cargo revenue for the first quarter of the fiscal year ending June 30 saw a 2% decline to $286.2 million, despite a 2.5% increase in traffic volume.
