OpenAI made a significant announcement on Tuesday, unveiling two new artificial intelligence (AI) models that are now available for free download. These models, named gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b, are open-weight language models that users can modify to suit their needs. This move by OpenAI is seen as a direct challenge to similar offerings by competitors in the United States and China.

The release of these open-weight models comes at a time when OpenAI is facing pressure to be more transparent about its software. Originally founded as a nonprofit organization with a mission to ensure Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity, OpenAI is now taking steps to share the inner workings of its technology with the public.

An open-weight model in the context of generative AI refers to a model in which the trained parameters are publicly available for users to fine-tune. This approach allows for greater customization and flexibility in using the AI technology. Other companies, such as Meta and Chinese startup DeepSeek, have also embraced open-source AI models with open weight capabilities.

During a briefing with journalists, Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s co-founder and president, expressed excitement about the release of these open-weight language models. He highlighted the incredible potential for innovation and research that these models offer.

OpenAI emphasized that the new models are text-only and deliver high performance at a low cost. They are well-suited for tasks such as internet searches and executing computer code. Additionally, the models are designed to be easy to run on local computer systems, making them accessible to a wide range of users.

The company is collaborating with partners like Orange and Snowflake to explore real-world applications of the models. OpenAI has also taken steps to ensure that the models are safeguarded against malicious use.

Earlier this year, OpenAI faced criticism for its lack of transparency regarding its technology. CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the company’s missteps and reaffirmed OpenAI’s commitment to operating as a nonprofit organization. The revised plan includes a separate money-making arm that will be overseen by the nonprofit board.

Overall, the release of these open-weight language models marks a significant milestone for OpenAI and the AI industry as a whole. By making these models freely available for download and customization, OpenAI is fostering innovation and collaboration in the field of artificial intelligence.
