Anila Quayyum Agha: Illuminating Spaces with Geometry of Light

Anila Quayyum Agha, a Pakistani-American artist based in Indianapolis, draws inspiration from Islamic mosaics and architecture to create stunning large-scale installations that play with light and shadow to transform a room. Her work, exemplified by pieces like “Intersections,” starts with a simple cube structure made of laser-cut steel. Intricate patterns are carved into the surface, and a light placed inside the cube casts mesmerizing shadows onto the surrounding walls.

The upcoming exhibition, “Anila Quayyum Agha: Geometry of Light,” at the Seattle Asian Art Museum, will showcase Agha’s work for the first time in the Pacific Northwest. Known for her exploration of cultural identity, gender, art, and spirituality, Agha’s installations have the power to turn spaces into ethereal environments reminiscent of traditional sacred spaces, using light and color to create intimacy and intricate shadows, much like lanterns or mashrabiya.

The exhibition will feature three of Agha’s transformative installations, along with framed mixed-media paper works. Running from August 27 to April 19, 2026, this is a rare opportunity to experience the artist’s captivating creations. For more information, visit Agha’s website and Instagram.

The images accompanying this article provide a glimpse of Agha’s work, showcasing the interplay of light, shadow, and intricate patterns in various colored rooms. Each installation is a testament to Agha’s skill in crafting immersive and visually stunning experiences for viewers.
