A Long Island Man’s Failed Suicide-By-Cop Attempt

Joseph Restaino, a 33-year-old Long Islander, was involved in a dramatic incident on Tuesday afternoon when he tried to provoke police officers into killing him. The situation unfolded when Restaino called 911 claiming he had hostages in his Bay Shore home and was feeling suicidal, according to Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers were met by Restaino wielding a sword. Despite attempts to subdue him with a taser, Restaino continued to charge at the officers with the blade. In response, one of the officers fired a shot into his chest, injuring him but ultimately saving his life.

It was later revealed that there were no hostages in the home, and the 911 call was a ruse to execute the failed suicide attempt. Restaino, who has a history of mental illness, underwent surgery at South Shore University Hospital and is currently under medical supervision.

While no charges have been filed against Restaino yet, authorities are monitoring his condition closely. Fortunately, neither of the responding officers was harmed during the incident.

This event comes shortly after another police-involved shooting in the same neighborhood, which has left residents concerned about their safety.

In a separate incident on July 24, another man was involved in a fatal altercation with a coworker and a police officer, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in the area.

Residents who witnessed both incidents expressed their shock and concern over the violence taking place in their community.
