Zohran Mamdani

In the latest twist of the New York City mayoral race, Democratic candidate and self-proclaimed socialist, Zohran Mamdani, has publicly declared his opposition to charter schools. This announcement has drawn both ire and intrigue, given that Mamdani himself attended the Bank Street School for Children, a private institution with tuition costs ranging from $37,554 to a staggering $68,793, as noted on Wikipedia.

Two key issues are at play here. Firstly, charter schools provide a crucial alternative to traditional public schools and often cater to minority students who may benefit significantly from these educational options. Secondly, teacher unions, which are inherently protective of their turf, often oppose charter schools as they view them as competitors siphoning off resources and students from the public education system. As a Democratic contender, Mamdani is clearly banking on the support of these unions in the upcoming election.

The New York Post elaborates:

Zohran Mamdani’s intention to wage war on charter schools if he ascends to the mayor’s office has ignited a firestorm of criticism from parents and advocates, who label his stance as “very misinformed.”

The 33-year-old assemblyman from Queens has committed to stalling any further charter school expansions, which predominantly serve minority and working-class demographics. He has even expressed his disapproval of charter schools sharing facilities within city-owned properties.

“I oppose efforts by the state to mandate an expansion of charter school operations in New York City,” he articulated in a questionnaire from the Staten Island Advance ahead of the June 24 Democratic primary.

Mamdani’s antagonism toward charter schools—which are run by private entities but funded by public money—aligns him closely with the United Federation of Teachers union, which endorsed him following his primary triumph over former Governor Andrew Cuomo and other candidates.

This scenario encapsulates a classic double standard: “School choice for me, but not for you.”

Zohran Mamdani is declaring war on schools that help Black and Hispanic kids succeed….and people are clapping like it’s progressive? When will New Yorkers wake up and realize this is sabotage, not equity? https://t.co/sDVxcW7ZkI

Currently, Mamdani appears to be leading in the polls, seemingly invulnerable. However, the issue of school choice presents a potential chink in his armor. His opponents would do well to leverage this weakness, and New Yorkers should seriously reconsider their support for a candidate whose educational policies may inadvertently harm the very communities he claims to champion.
