Robert Keele Steps Down as xAI’s Head of Legal

After just over a year in the role, Robert Keele has announced that he will be stepping down as xAI’s head of legal. Keele cited his desire to spend more time with his children as the reason for his departure, acknowledging a misalignment in worldviews with CEO Elon Musk, who has yet to comment on Keele’s exit.

“I love my two toddlers and I don’t get to see them enough,” Keele shared in a post on both X and LinkedIn. While he described his time at the AI startup as “incredible” and working with Musk as “the adventure of a lifetime,” Keele expressed the difficulty of balancing both his family and professional responsibilities.

Upon joining xAI in May 2024 as its first legal head, Keele had recently launched his own legal firm, Keele Law, which he described as having a short-lived existence of approximately three weeks. Despite this, the opportunity to lead legal operations at xAI proved too enticing to pass up.

Following Keele’s arrival, xAI announced a significant $6 billion Series B funding round in May 2024, with notable investors such as Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital. The company’s valuation soared to $24 billion, leading to rapid growth and the subsequent acquisition of X, Musk’s social media company, earlier this year.

Before venturing into entrepreneurship, Keele held legal leadership positions at Elroy Air, an autonomous aircraft manufacturer, and Airbus’s Silicon Valley innovation center.

Replacing Keele as head of legal is Lily Lim, a former rocket scientist at NASA who transitioned into law. Lim joined xAI in late 2024 as a privacy and intellectual property specialist, bringing a wealth of experience from her previous roles at firms like ServiceNow.

Keele’s departure adds to the ongoing executive turnover within Musk’s companies, with recent exits including X CEO Linda Yaccarino and several top executives at Tesla. Musk’s demanding work ethic, which sometimes involves employees sleeping at the office, has been a point of contention.

Similar to Musk’s approach, newer companies like Cognition, an AI coding startup, are adopting aggressive tactics to stay ahead of competitors. The company’s CEO recently communicated to employees a lack of belief in work-life balance as a strategy for success.
