OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, and the GPT-5 team faced a barrage of questions and requests during a Reddit ask-me-anything session. Users were eager to learn more about the new model and expressed a desire to bring back the previous model, GPT-4o. One of the new features of GPT-5 is a real-time router that determines which model to use for a specific prompt, either responding quickly or taking more time to process answers.

However, during the AMA on the r/ChatGPT Reddit, users complained that GPT-5 was not performing as well as GPT-4o. Altman explained that the router was not functioning correctly when initially rolled out, leading to GPT-5 appearing “dumber.” He assured users that improvements were being made to ensure the right model is selected more frequently and transparently for each query.

In response to user feedback, Altman promised to explore the possibility of allowing Plus subscribers to continue using GPT-4o. Additionally, he announced plans to double rate limits for Plus users to facilitate the transition to the new model without concerns about exceeding monthly prompts.

During the AMA, Altman was also questioned about a chart presented during a live presentation, which became the subject of “chart crime” jokes due to inaccuracies. Altman acknowledged the chart mistake as a “mega chart screwup” on X. Despite the blunder, Altman reassured users that corrections would be made to address their concerns.

While some users poked fun at using GPT for charts, others, like GPT-5 reviewer Simon Willison, highlighted instances where the model struggled, such as converting data into a table.

Altman concluded the AMA by promising continued efforts to address issues and listen to user feedback to ensure stability and improvement. The team remains committed to refining GPT-5 and addressing user concerns as they arise.
